We are back to our regular meeting day on the first Thursday of the month, mark your calendars. Your assignment for this month (If you choose to accept it!) is to illustrate the concept of: Community. Your second choice and the color for the month is a very neutral: 18% Gray. Assignment #3 is: I Spy. So there you have it, three lively choices: Community, 18% Gray, or I Spy. Feel free to choose just one, or if your are ambitious, try all three. Please bring no more than six (6) images to share. You may share your photographs as digital files (Cd's, thumbdrives, or memory cards), or as finished prints. Prints should be at least eight by ten inches, and larger is always better. If you do bring prints, be sure to let me know at the beginning of the meeting, so I won't forget to allow time for you to share. For our next monthly assignments, you might be looking for: Couples. What is it?. or Heart. If you have another idea, please feel free to email or call me. I am looking for guest presentations for the group. There will be NO MEETING for December. We will be having an open house at the studio on Monday December the 8th, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. We call this the Naples Walkabout so if you like you can walk around and see the holiday lights and decorations. Feel free to bring your cameras. We will be serving hot drinks and deserts in the studio. We do this event every year and usually have a 100+ people attend. I am looking for guest presentations for the group for 2009. If you, or someone you know, would like to do about a 30 minute presentation that the group would find interesting, please let me know.

WHAT: Passages: Photographs of Africa by Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher WHEN: November 15, 2008 at 1PM. (Note: This exhibit continues until – April 19, 2009; Bowers is open from Tues - Sun: 9AM - 5PM) WHERE: Bowers Museum, 2002 North Main Street, Santa Ana, CA 92706 COSTS: $12.00 DETAILS: It's opening day! Let's get together and view a photo exhibit at the Bowers! We'll meet at 1pm in the main courtyard area, purchase tickets and then have a look. From the website: Presented in large format color photographs, photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher’s images of African ritual practices are vivid, rich, intimate and intense. This dynamic exhibition of images from around the African continent is divided into six themes: Coming of Age, Courtship and Marriage, Beliefs and Worship, Masks and Masquerades, Royalty and Power, and Spirits and Ancestors. Six videos bring to life the song, dance and movement of related ceremonies and, objects of personal adornment similar to those as in the photographs will be included. Three-dimensional objects from the Bowers Museum’s permanent collection of African objects will also be on display. Beckwith and Fisher have traveled and lived within Africa together and independently over the last thirty years prolifically documenting tradition and ceremony.

**I am still getting information on this event! Please stay tuned! WHAT: Large Civil War Event WHEN: November 8 (& 9th if you choose to go alone) - We'll be meeting on the 8th - all day event. Starts at 10AM. We'll meet to carpool at 8AM. WHERE: Tierra Rejada Ranch, Moorpark, CA COSTS: TBD + gas, parking & food. DETAILS: Let's meet (and carpool!) up to Moorpark for a day of historical reenacting. A great chance to practice your people picture taking!! Horses, camps, people dressed in garb and there should be food as well. This will be an all day event with three military battles (with horses) taking place and one of them being at twilight. Note: If you go on Sunday without the group, they will be having 2 military battles that day. I have never been to this event before and as I get more information I will update this event! WHAT: Fire Documentation Interpretive Program Photography Exhibit WHEN: November 2, 2008 (Exhibit runs November 1 - 30th); 10AM WHERE: Santa Ana Zoo in Prentice Park, 1801 East Chestnut Avenue, Santa Ana, CA 92701 COSTS: $6.00 + possible parking DETAILS: Several members of our group participated in this program. Now there will be a photo exhibit of all the participants photographs! Let's get together and take a look at the images we were able to capture over the course of 8 months! From email description: "The Fire Photo Documentation Interpretive Program first began on March 8th with a full roster of participants and ran its course of eight months, ending on October 4th with the idea to capture the re-birth and re-growth of the plants of the canyon. To recap and share our photographs with each other as well as the general public, the Irvine Ranch Conservancy has partnered with the Santa Ana Zoo to display a small selection of our pictures at the Santa Ana Zoo in Prentice Park! The display will take place from November 1st through November 30th." WHEN: October 19, 2008 WHERE: Bolsa Chica Wetlands, 3842 Warner Avenue, Huntington Beach, CA COSTS: Free except for any food purchased and possibly parking DETAILS: Arrive as early as you like and take photographs on your own or in groups. At 10:30 AM (in the Interpretive Center parking lot), we'll meet for an early brunch at one of the local eateries and discuss photos taken, good spots, and critters seen. There is parking in front of the Interpretive Center that is free as well as a second parking lot along PCH about a mile south (?) from Warner. NOTES: - It is best to go earlier rather than later to beat the heat. - If you'd like to meet to take photographs together, leave the time you're arriving in your comments! - The reserve is open from sunrise to sunset. - Bring water and sunscreen. - Most importantly, walk quietly, be patient, and have your camera ready all the time! Fingers crossed they are trying to offer a gallery in December! I'll keep you posted! Irvine Ranch Wildlands and Parks is holding a year long program that is aiming to photo document the changes in Round Canyon after the 2007 fires. It started in March 2007 and will finish in sometime in the fall of 2008. Each month on the first Saturday or Sunday the group will meet. You must sign up through the Irvine Ranch Wildlands and Parks. There are limited numbers of spaces and they go quickly! COSTS: Free DESCRIPTION FROM THE WEBSITE: "The Santiago fire was one of the catastrophic fires that occured during the southern California firestorms of 2007. We will discuss the basics of fire ecology along the recently burned trail in Round Canyon. Bring your own camera (digital or 35mm and extra batteries) to document the burned hills, the returning wildlife and the new re-growth of plants. We will stop at various points of interest to capture the regeneration of nature in the canyon. Be prepared to walk for 3 miles maximum through a burned location. Highly interpretive, docent-led hike, ages 16+. "
