Since there is not a meetup in December I was wondering if anyone is interested in having the meetup at the Getty Villa in Malibu?. It is a great place to visit with a camea, great for macro, portrait and landscape photography.

Let me know if anyone is interested as well as setting up carpooling.

I have never met a photographer who doesn't love to frame a good shot, but can you frame a good shot within a frame? That is your first choice this month: Frame in a Frame.

Every day almost all of us pass by a unique exterior wall. Assignment number two: Exterior Wall. I know that you urban landscape photographers can have a ball showing us their favorite walls.

Assignment #3 is for you macro loving photographers: A Bugs Life. Get down and introduce us to your favorite bug.

All three of these are very loose and you can illustrate the concepts in any way that pleases you. Have fun, be creative. So there you have it, three brand new choices: Frame in a Frame, Exterior Wall, and A bugs Life. Feel free to choose just one, or if your are ambitious, try all three. Remember that these are only suggestions, and you do not have to do the assignments. You may share any photographs that you like, but do keep them in good taste.

Please bring no more than six (6) images and a title image (this is new) to share. You may present your photographs as digital files (Cd's, thumbdrives, or memory cards), or as finished prints. Prints should be at least eight by ten inches, and larger is always better. If you do bring prints, be sure to let me know at the beginning of the meeting, so I won't forget to allow time for you to share.

For our next monthly assignments, you might be looking for: Moody Light, Soft and Dreamy, weird Color. If you have any other ideas, please feel free to email or call me.

I am always looking for guest presentations for the group. If you, or someone you know, would like to do a short 15-30 minute presentation that the group would find interesting, let me know. (Please!)

Can you show character in a photograph? I hope so because that is our first illustration for Oct. Character. Your second choice is: Animals. Now I know everyone can find an animal to photograph, but let's get creative here. Assignment #3 is: Power. Power is all around us. Power machines, power people, powerful surf, and lets not forget power plants. All three of these are very loose and you can illustrate the concepts in any way that pleases you. Have fun, be creative. So there you have it, three brand new choices: Character, animals, and power. Feel free to choose just one, or if your are ambitious, try all three. Have you seen any good sunsets lately, did you take photos? Good, because that is our first illustration for Sept. Sunsets. Your second choice is: Fruit. Summer fruit is in season, take a nice photo and then enjoy the fruit. Assignment #3 is: Rust. It's amazing how much rust I have seen around town. All three of these are very loose and you can illustrate the concepts in any way that pleases you. Have fun, be creative. So there you have it, three brand new choices: Sunsets, Fruit or Rust. WHAT: From Robert Frank's "The Americans"

WHEN: July 11, 2009 from 11AM until you decide to leave exhibit (Note: The exhibit runs June 14, 2009 through October 19, 2009, feel free to visit on your own at another time.)

WHERE: MOCA, 250 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012

COSTS: $10.00 + Parking (est. $8.00)

DETAILS: From the website, "n 1955, the Swiss-born photographer Robert Frank won a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation grant to photograph American people and places. For two years, Frank traveled by car throughout the United States, amassing over 20,000 negatives. The edited portfolio of 83 photographs was published in book form as Les Américains by Robert Delpire in France in 1958, and as The Americans in 1959 by Grove Press in New York. The American edition included an introduction by Jack Kerouac, the Beat writer most famous for his novel On the Road. Describing the emotional scope of Frank’s portfolio, Kerouac wrote: “After seeing these pictures you end up finally not knowing whether a jukebox is sadder than a coffin.” Frank’s photographs, which have become landmarks in the history of photography, were created with a hand-held Leica camera, often with a wide-angle lens, resulting in compositions that appear unplanned, spontaneous, and are ultimately revealing. In this 50th anniversary year of its publication, MOCA presents a rare showing of the complete set of photographs comprising The Americans, in the order carefully devised by Frank for the book. MOCA’s portfolio, which is the only complete set on the West coast, was purchased in 1995 with funds provided by Ralph M. Parsons Foundation. From the Permanent Collection: Robert Frank’s “The Americans” was initiated by Rebecca Morse and Corrina Peipon.

From the Permanent Collection: Robert Frank’s “The Americans” is presented by The Broad Foundation. The exhibition is made possible by endowment support from The Max Yavno Fund."
