15 Days in May
City Photo Contest Celebrates 10th Year with New Category and More Prize Money! The city of West Sacramento begins the 10th year of the ?15 Days in May? photography contest with an increase in prize money and a new category: the Mayor?s Image of Health Award, in support of the city?s mission to improve personal fitness and celebrate community wellness. For each of the six entry categories, the prize money has also increased to $1,000 first prize, $500 second prize, and $250 third prize. All photos must be taken between May 1-May 15, 2008. For the first time, the city will accept up to two entries from contestants, one in the category for which the contestant is most eligible (resident, nonresident, or working in West Sacramento) and/or one in the new Mayor?s Image of Health category, depicting health, fitness, healthy food or lifestyle in West Sacramento. See the official entry form and contest rules for more details. As before, the contest is open to amateur photographers only. There?s no cost to enter. Fill out an official entry form for the corresponding category entered (entry forms are available on the city?s Web site or any city office). Turn in completed entry forms and photo prints (not to exceed 5" by 7") to the West Sacramento City Hall, 1110 West Capitol Ave., on any weekday by Thursday, 5 p.m., May 15. Entries will not be returned and photos can be used for promotional purposes following the contest. Winners will be announced in June at a meeting of the West Sacramento City Council. For more information about the ?15 Days in May? photo contest, call (916) 617-4500. Here's the link to the original site where you can see all the rules and get an entry form. :o) |

Anybody have any ideas of what this could mean?
Mayor?s Image of Health, photos depicting images of HEALTHY LIFESTYLES, FITNESS and WELLNESS in West Sacramento. I mean I guess you could get shots of people running/walking/biking. But what else? |

I entered last year's contest with a picture at Raley Field. Not too bad, but not really snappy. The winning photo was taken in the harbor area, looking at one of the ocean going ships from the perspective of looking up the mooring line. Really good picture. I think they have the previous winners posted on their website. One of the challenges is finding something of interest in West Sacramento.

Yeah I looked at the previous winners but it seems like they had a different theme last year? West Sac is definitely the challenge! Most of the winners looked pretty average though, I know what shot you're talking about and it was by far the best technically. Well, I guess I will be hanging out in West Sac on Thursday...LOL! (have you seen the $$$ the winner gets, heck it's worth a TRY...!)

I took some pictures a few years ago in order to enter this contest. None of the pics I took were particularly striking so I had a hard time choosing one to enter. I was particularly miffed though when several of the winning entries had obviously ignored some of the rules that I had painstakingly observed. So I didn't bother to enter again. The rules look a little simpler this year though.

Just realized I'm not eligible for this contest. :(
From the rules: "Open to amateur photographers only (defined as those who do not sell photography or electronic visual media.)" I'm sure that can't mean "selling" to friends and family, but having a website for me is a dead give away. Too bad. I had a good idea. If I can pull it off, I'll submit here anyway. Chad PS. Man, I'm bored! |

Ok, so I went to W. Sac yesterday for like 3 hrs and drove all around, by the river walk...everywhere trying to look for something to shoot, and no offense but W. Sac is ugly, and there's not a lot of 'healthy lifestyle' stuff at every corner... I don't think I'll be able to enter either...oh well, maybe next year?

Brooke,
Your observations on West Sacramento made me laugh. Half the challenge is finding some interesting to photograph. The easy part is composing the picture. Grant |

There's a rowing team that practices on the deep channel starting out from the Lake Washington Club and it's early morning and I'm guessing the fog/mist will still be hovering above the water - and just a short distance from my office. Also there's some little league teams and a cyclist group that practices along the delta...these are a few of my ideas.
I had planned on entering this but since one of the rules is that you need to be present to accept the award (and I'll be in Tampa) I'd have to use a 'ghost-shooter' - you know, just in case I actually win ![]() -missy |
